I have the opportunity to make positive changes in people's lives through changing their smiles. The resulting change in their health and happiness ultimately improves their overall well-being. – Dr. Sharleen Tan
Dr. Sharleen Tan is a gifted, gentle orthodontist who shares the love of her profession with other family members (her two sisters are both orthodontists in the Ottawa region as well as her aunt and cousin in Montreal). The knowledge that she is able to bring about such positive changes in patients' lives brings Dr. Tan great rewards.
Dr. Tan is given the opportunity to meet so many amazing patients and families during the treatment process. She believes that the connection she forms between herself and each patient is essential to generating a real and lasting positive outcome for orthodontic treatment.
Thus, she believes it is always important to be ready to talk about treatments. She works to establish and maintain open lines of communication with each patient. This includes checking in with patients concerning their feelings about their progress, and inquiring about their lives outside of the office, too.
Dr. Tan has assembled a hand-picked team of orthodontic staff members. Each person brings experience, insight, and compassion to the practice, creating a professional, friendly, and welcoming atmosphere. Together, Dr. Tan and her team work with their patients to create effective, timely treatment plans, emphasizing the needs and goals of the patient and the family.
Dr. Tan also seeks out continuing education offerings. She knows that by doing so, she is able to improve her techniques, learn about new treatment approaches, and broaden the services she is able to offer her patients. Additionally, Dr. Tan has given presentations to dentists and dental hygienists about the orthodontic treatments she provides, so they are able to better understand the treatment processes for their mutual patients.
Knowing the importance of being connected with her peers, Dr. Tan is an active member of:
- Canadian Association of Orthodontists
- American Association of Orthodontists
- Canadian Dental Association
- Ontario Association of Orthodontists
- Ontario Dental Association
- Ottawa Orthodontic Study Club

A native of Miramichi, New Brunswick, Dr. Tan has called Ottawa her home for more than ten years. When not treating her patients, she keeps herself active and healthy through pursuits like rollerblading, taking long walks and hikes. Dr. Tan also enjoys photography and traveling, as well as spending time with her family and friends.
Commitment to community
Dr. Tan believes in giving back to her community. On Wednesday mornings, she practices at the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario, treating patients with cleft lip and palate, as well as craniofacial anomalies. This work brings her into close contact with the Cleft Lip & Palate Team which includes plastic surgeons, oral and maxillofacial surgeons, speech pathologists, audiologists, and ENT physicians. Together, they treat this unique group of patients from newborns to adults. Additionally, Dr. Tan is an orthodontic consultant for Health Canada.
Little-known fact about Dr. Tan: Every year since 2005, she has walked a section of the Camino de Santiago, which is a medieval pilgrimage route in northern Spain. She has completed more than 4,000 kilometers so far.
